3 Reasons why Gdańsk Makes the Perfect Festive Escape

A city rich in history, culture and charm

Gdańsk forms part of the “Tricity” area alongside Sopot and Gdynia.

It’s known for amber, silver, colourful architecture, and its iconic waterfront, giving it a storybook feel that’s ideal for a winter getaway.

You can walk the Royal Route through the Old Town, explore Mariacka Street’s antique and amber shops, or stop at the famous Neptune’s Fountain and Gdańsk Crane for those postcard-worthy photos.

Easy, affordable travel from the UK

With flights around two hours from major UK airports, it’s one of the most accessible Christmas market destinations for families.

Most carriers are low-cost (mainly Ryanair and Wizzair), and transfers are simple: Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is just 15–20 minutes from the city centre by Uber, tram, or train.

Perfect for families with toddlers

One of the biggest surprises? Gdańsk is incredibly family-friendly. Perfect for those of us travelling with little ones, these attractions will keep toddlers entertained between market visits:

  • Majaland Indoor Theme Park
  • Hevelianum Science Centre
  • Gdynia Aquarium (the largest in Poland)
  • Gdańsk Zoo (also the largest in Poland)
  • Loopy’s World Indoor Play Centre (3,000 m² of fun)

A Deep Dive Into The Gdansk Christmas Markets

Running from 21 November to 23 December, the Gdańsk Christmas Markets are widely considered some of the most beautiful in Europe. Expect theatre, dance, carols, craft workshops, and glowing “charming corners” scattered through the Old Town’s prettiest streets.

The main market sits in Targ Węglowy (Coal Market Square), with stalls spreading to Tkacka Street, Bogusławskiego, and Forum Gdańsk’s courtyard.

What makes the Gdansk Christmas market special?

You’ll wander through light installations, illuminated decorations, and stalls selling:

  • handmade Christmas ornaments
  • amber jewellery (a local specialty)
  • ceramics, woodwork and artisan crafts
  • regional Polish treats

There’s an official map and full event details on the market’s English-language website: https://bozonarodzeniowy.pl/en

Pro tip (especially for families):

The markets are becoming more popular each year, so go early evening or on weekdays to avoid the biggest crowds. Toddlers will thank you.

Where To Say, What To Eat and How To Plan Smoothly

Where to stay

Hotels

These hotels are all well-located and reliable for families:

  • Radisson
  • Holiday Inn
  • Hilton
  • Mercure
Apartments

If you’re after a little more space, and apartment is a great choice. There are plenty of options available throughout the Old Town and riverfront.

If you’d prefer to stay in Sopot, look around Monte Cassino, the main central area.

B&Bs

In Poland these are called “Willa” – not villas as we imagine them in the UK, but more like cosy, affordable guesthouses.

Don’t be surprised if they’re smaller and more traditional.

Where to eat

Gdańsk has brilliant, cosy restaurants ideal after a chilly evening at the markets. Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Chleb i Wino (Bread & Wine) – beautiful comfort food
  • Whiskey in the Jar – lively, fun atmosphere
  • Goldwasser – iconic and elegant
  • Pierogarnia – perfect Polish dumplings (a must-try)

Quick note – any trip you book with me, I’ll handle any dinner reservations you want to make as part of the process.

Logistics made easy

Local transport: Uber, trams, SKM trains, or simply walk—the Old Town is compact.

Weather: During Christmas Markets season, it’ll be cold with a chance of snow. Pack warm layers, thermals for kids, hats, gloves, and waterproof boots.

Currency: Polish Zloty (PLN). Roughly £1 ≈ 4.5 PLN.

A Magical, Manageable, and Memorable Family Christmas Break

Gdańsk delivers everything you want from a festive escape: atmospheric markets, incredible value, rich culture, and family-friendly attractions, all wrapped up in a city small enough to explore easily with little ones.

If you’re dreaming of a Christmas trip that feels exciting yet low-stress, Gdańsk is the perfect choice.
